What treatment can and can’t do
Clinically proven prescription treatment is available for men with male pattern hair loss. It is not a quick fix, and we will always be straight with you about what to expect.

Treatment is taken once a day. It usually takes 3 to 6 months for hair loss to stabilise, and some men notice extra shedding in the first few months. The best results are usually seen after 12 to 24 months of daily use.

The most common cause of hair loss in men is male pattern hair loss. It usually runs in families and tends to come on gradually, often at the temples, the hairline or the crown. It is very common, and it is easier to talk about than you might think.

Is it right for you?

Men aged 18 and over with male pattern hair loss: gradual thinning at the temples, hairline or crown.
Treatment is for men only. Women must not take it, and women who are or could become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken tablets, because they pose a risk to an unborn baby.
Speak to your GP instead if:
- your hair loss came on suddenly, or is in patches
- your scalp is itchy, sore, red or scaly
- you are losing hair from other parts of your body
- you feel unwell, or your hair loss started after an illness or a new medicine
Please also tell us if you have ever had depression, low mood or thoughts of self-harm, if you are trying for a baby, if you have liver problems, or if you are having PSA tests for your prostate. Your prescriber will take this into account.

Are there side effects?
Most men don’t get side effects. Like all medicines, treatment can cause them, but they are usually mild and improve with time.
- Common (fewer than 2 in 100 men with the daily tablet): lower sex drive, erection problems and problems with ejaculation.
- Less common: signs of depression, changes in breast tissue, such as enlargement or tenderness, and skin reactions.
- Frequency not known: palpitations, male infertility, suicidal thoughts or behaviour, testicular pain, blood in semen and anxiety.
- Allergic reactions such as a rash, hives or swelling of the face, lips, eyelids, arms or legs. Get medical help straight away.
With the daily capsule, you must not donate blood for at least 6 months after stopping, and it can reduce semen volume and sperm count. Your treatment comes with a leaflet and patient card explaining what to look out for.
